LSO introductionResearch focus and goalsThe Radiation and Optics Laboratory's research fields are radio and optical communications, with the primary focus being on the physical layer of the telecommunications network. Currently, the laboratory’s research activity includes the transmission of a synchronization signal via optical fibres, a new generation of optical access networks, adaptive antennas and advanced radio interfaces for next-generation mobile communications, including satellite communications for small satellites. The laboratory team is responsible for the design and development of both analogue and high-speed digital microwave electronics for optical and microwave communication equipment, the 3D modelling and simulation of passive microwave structures and the development of antennas to include the terahertz frequency range. Transfer of knowledgeFor past 20 years the laboratory has regularly organized seminars in the field of optical and radio communications that are designed to transfer knowledge from the university to the Slovenian industrial environment. The laboratory is also involved in the educational process, giving lectures on courses in the field of electromagnetic radiation, optical and radio communications. These lectures are supported by a broad spectrum of exciting, dynamic and educational lab exercises. Integration into European research and developmentThe Radiation and Optics Laboratory was successfully involved in the European research projects: ESTHER (electronics for 10Gbit/s), ATLAS (electronics for 40 and 80Gbit/s), and IPHOBAC (Integrated Photonic mm-Wave Functions For Broadband Connectivity). Currently, it is part of Innovative Training Network FiWiN5G (Fiber-Wireless Integrated Networks for 5th Generation delivery) and two COST actions related to 5G: IRACON (Inclusive Radio Communication Networks for 5G and beyond) and EuIMWP (European Network for High Performance Integrated Microwave Photonics). The laboratory is interested in cooperation with industrial partners as well as research institutions.
